Cooling

We offer a wide range of cooling units, each adapted to the unique needs of the current installation. Together with the milk cooling tank and the control unit, the cooling unit makes up an optimized, high-quality, energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable cooling solution. For horizontal milk cooling tanks, the cooling unit can be attached to or separated from the tank. Availability of the attached cooling unit depends on the size and cooling capacity of the cooling system as well as the type of milking system.

All our cooling units are developed and produced by us in our own factories. This ensures great quality and offers the opportunity to customize the cooling unit and cooling capacity to the requirements on each individual farm, regarding e.g. milk quantity, ambient temperature, cooling time, collection frequency, etc.

A cooling system from Wedholms means simple installation as well as cost-efficient operation, developed to minimize the environmental impact. Our standard refrigerant is R134a, due to its functional and environmental benefits. However, on request, we can equip the cooling unit for other refrigerants as well.

    Attached cooling units

    There are many advantages with an attached cooling unit; easy transportation, quick and cheap installation and no need to fill the refrigerant on farm. With an attached cooling unit, you get a compact plug & play solution, perfectly adapted to your needs. The possibility to get an attached cooling unit on your tank depends on the number and size of the compressors and thus the cooling capacity and cooling class. For robotic milking, the cooling capacity is lower and thus attached cooling is possible even for bigger tank sizes. Please contact your local dealer or Wedholms directly to find out if an attached cooling unit is an alternative for you.

    In markets with hot climate, we recommend to place the cooling unit outdoors since it might be hard to achieve sufficient ventilation of the heat produced by the cooling unit. Placement outdoors is possible with a separated cooling unit.

    Advantages with the attached cooling unit;

    • Compact solution
    • Easy transportation
    • Quick and cheap installation
    • No need to fill refrigerant on farm

  • Separated cooling units

    Separated cooling units

    With a separated cooling unit, you have full flexibility and it is also a space-saving solution because you can place the cooling unit outside of the milk room, either in a machine room or outside the building. Note that if there is a height difference, or the distance between the cooling unit and the milk cooling tank is more than 6-8 meters, we recommend to install a receiver and a magnetic valve to secure a problem-free performance of the cooling solution.

    Here you can read more about the receiver and magnetic valve.

    Separate cooling units are also available as aftermarket products and can be used for a variety of purposes. Thus, a cooling unit from Wedholms can be used for many purposes, not necessarily connected to milk production.

    You can find more information and put an order for a separate cooling unit on our web shop.

    Please contact your local dealer or Wedholms directly if you have any questions.

    The separated cooling unit can be placed indoors or outdoors. The standard length of the electric cables is 10 meters for horizontal tanks. In regions with hot climate, we recommend to place the cooling unit outdoors since it might be hard to achieve sufficient ventilation of the heat produced by the cooling unit.

    Advantages with a separated cooling unit;

    • Space-saving
    • Flexible placement
    • Available for aftermarket

    As standard, the cooling capacity is calculated for B-class, meaning 32 degrees Celsius as ambient temperature in the milk room. However, in countries with a hot climate, an upgrade to A-class might be necessary. The cooling capacity is then calculated for an ambient temperature of 38 degrees. There is a fixed price for A-class, depending on the milk flow, and it is calculated per compressor. The adaption for A-class must be made in the factory when building the cooling unit. In hot climate, we generally recommend to put the cooling unit outside to prevent cooling problems during summer time. Here you can read more about our cooling units.

  • Capacity regulator
    +
    Compatible with : Horizontal tank; Horizontal tank; Vertical tank (Silo) Vertical tank (Silo) Tank through wall Tank through wall

    Capacity regulator

    When the milk volume in the tank is small, there is a risk for freezing. The capacity regulator moderates the cooling effect when there is only a small volume of milk in the tank, so the risk for freezing is minimized. This of course is especially relevant in robotic milking because the tank is filled rather slowly after cleaning. Thus, we offer the capacity regulator as a standard on all our milk cooling tanks for robotic milking. This means that you won’t have any problems with freezing in the tank and your milk will keep its high quality. The capacity regulator is installed from factory, but it can also be retrofitted on farm. This can be very convenient if you want to adapt your existing conventional Wedholms tank to robotic milking. The capacity regulator is especially designed to operate with the Argos control system.

    Advantages with the capacity regulator;

    • Avoids freezing of the milk at small volumes
    • Standard on tanks for robotic milking
    • Secures milk quality
    • Can be retrofitted
  • Receiver and magnetic valve
    +
    Compatible with : Horizontal tank; Horizontal tank; Vertical tank (Silo) Vertical tank (Silo) Tank through wall Tank through wall

    Receiver and magnetic valve

    A receiver is a small vessel that contains refrigerant and works as a buffer to handle different loads on the cooling system, which could be caused by e.g. very differing temperatures in the environment of the cooling unit, or that the cooling unit is placed some distance from the tank or at a different height level. A receiver as an option, in these cases, ensures an optimal performance of the cooling unit.

    A magnetic valve is recommended as an option when the cooling unit is placed some distance from the tank. It prevents refrigerant migration to the evaporator and thus gives the system a better compressor start and thus a longer lifespan.

    The receiver and magnetic valve should be factory mounted, but can if necessary also be retrofitted by an authorized cooling technician.

    Advantages with a receiver and magnetic valve;

    • Secure optimal performance of the cooling unit
    • Enable placement of the cooling unit on a distance from the tank or on a different height level
    • Minimises the risk for operational disturbances if the ambient temperature is varying
    • Grant a better start and longer lifespan for the compressor

  • Extended side evaporators (Silo)

    Compatible with : Vertical tank (Silo) Vertical tank (Silo)

    Extended side evaporators for Silo

    Silo milk cooling tanks have a smaller cooling surface in relation to volume, compared to horizontal tanks. This makes them very suitable for robotic milking, but in conventional milking systems, the cooling capacity might not be sufficient. Therefore, the Wedholms silo tanks are automatically equipped with extended side evaporators if the standard version is not enough, according to the calculated cooling capacity needed. The extended side evaporators will automatically be added in the configuration of your new silo tank, if needed to secure the cooling capacity. An optimized cooling is of course a pre-requisite to secure your milk quality. Depending on the cooling capacity needed, it might also be necessary to install a pre-cooler to secure milk quality. Read more about pre-cooling here. Note that extended side evaporators are factory mounted and only available for manhole at 18:00 (above the outlet). Read more about our silo tanks here.

    Advantages with the extended side evaporators;

    • Increase the cooling capacity
    • Optimize the silo for conventional milking
    • Secure an optimized milk cooling and thus milk quality
    • Standard when an increased cooling capacity is needed
    • Also available as an option
