A Future-Proof CO₂ Refrigeration Solution at Seby Lantbruk

When Seby Lantbruk faced the need for a future-proof and sustainable refrigeration solution, they chose to take a leading role in adopting new technology. Together with Ölandskylteknik, Sweden’s first 3-meter diameter silo with direct expansion CO₂ was installed — a project that now sets a new benchmark for refrigeration technology in agriculture.

The Challenge

The agricultural sector is facing increasing demands for energy efficiency, operational reliability, and environmental responsibility. At the same time, stricter EU regulations on F-gases are driving the gradual phase-out of traditional refrigerants.
For Seby Lantbruk, the objectives were clear:

  • A long-term sustainable solution
  • High energy efficiency
  • Technology ready for future regulatory requirements

The Solution

The chosen solution was an innovative silo system using direct expansion carbon dioxide (CO₂) as the refrigerant. CO₂ is a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 1, making it one of the most climate-friendly alternatives available.

The 3-meter silo combines:

  • Direct CO₂ expansion for fast and efficient cooling
  • A robust design adapted to the demanding conditions of agricultural operations
  • A solution fully independent of future F-gas regulations

The Result

The project resulted in a reliable, energy-efficient, and environmentally optimized refrigeration system that meets not only today’s requirements, but also those of tomorrow.

For Seby Lantbruk, the investment delivers:

  • Reduced climate impact
  • A modern system with high operational reliability
  • Confidence in having chosen a future-proof, regulation-ready technology

For the industry as a whole, the installation clearly demonstrates that CO₂-based refrigeration in large silos is not only feasible — it is ready to be scaled up.

A Step Toward the Future of Agriculture

This unique installation shows how technological innovation and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. Through close collaboration between the customer, the refrigeration contractor, and the technology supplier, a project has been realized that moves the development of sustainable refrigeration systems forward.

We are proud to have been part of this pioneering project and look forward to continuing to support the future of agriculture with smart, sustainable, and efficient refrigeration solutions.
